A Letter from Susan and Nels Westman Endorsing YES on L

Nels and Susan Westman

Dear Neighbors,

As support for Measure L, Save Our Trestle has grown, so to have the scare tactics of the No on L campaign. Contrary to their doom-and-gloom, Measure L will not bring Capitola city government to its knees. Quite the opposite.

Measure L is simply an excellent way for the residents of Capitola to voice their strong support for allowing pedestrians and cyclists to remain safely in the railroad corridor away from the cars and congestion of the Village, and to express their affection for our Trestle as it now is without lumbering locomotives.

For many, Measure L is an excellent opportunity to express our displeasure and disbelief that the RTC is proceeding full speed ahead to restore freight operations along our shoreline.

When you vote YES on Measure L you:

  • express your desire for a bike, e-bike and pedestrian trail on the historic Capitola Trestle, because there is physically not room for both a train and a trail

  • reject the current RTC plan to detour the trail through Capitola Village which is already heavily impacted by traffic and would be dangerous for seniors, the disabled, kids and bike riders

  • oppose the current RTC plan to build a required chain link fence the length of Capitola separating train operations from people on the trail and limiting current beach and bluff access to only protected crossings

  • support safe routes to schools like New Brighton Middle School where the Trestle is already used by lots of kids

  • are taking a stand to stop the waste of taxpayer dollars for an ultra expensive yet unfunded fantasy train carrying minimal passengers which will have an undetectable impact on Highway 1 traffic

We think YES on Measure L is hugely important not only for Capitola but ultimately for the County as a whole. Thanks for listening and voting.
